What should I do? My local driving range sucks?
All the balls are duds that have been reused over and over for like 50 years and are never replaced.
The rubber tees are 3.5 or 4 inches tall, which is way too tall.
The carpet is hard as a rock, so I don't drop the ball on the deck because I don't want to wreck my clubs on a mis-hit.
Also their practice green sucks. It is a bumpy carpet on concrete with cracks between the carpet sections so you can't do a putt more than 5 feet without the ball changing directions. Also, there are 4 trees that surround it that shed there leaves All Over the place. The leaves coat the entire green in the fall so the ball doesn't roll smoothly.
I guess I am going to have to make the half hour drive to next closest one.
Sounds like you already answered your question, but there is another option.
Get some used golf balls (most golfers have them laying around everywhere or you can buy them in bulk cheap), and buy a shag bag.
You go out to some soccer fields, baseball fields, park, etc. and hit balls there. It is actually more effective practice than a standard driving range, in my opinion. You will have the same focus you do on the course because you know if you hit an errant shot you have to go get it.
I used to go with my dad to the park when he did this and I have done it quite a bit myself. It really is effective practice. You can hit anything from wedges to 7 irons depending on the size of the field.
Something you can do for your short game too is practice at the practice green of a local public course. There's nothing against it and no one will say anything. Just show up and start practicing. It doesn't cost you anything and the facilities are better.
